Athletic Director

West End School (WES) is a scholarship-based, independent, PK- 8th grade school with a mission to provide a safe, structured environment for boys in which academic rigor, character development, and responsible action establish the foundation for a purposeful life.

Admission is open to boys who are capable of attaining grade-level proficiency. West End School strives to address the issues boys in our community face by creating for its students a loving environment of high expectations and personal responsibility. Through the School’s rigorous academic and personal standards, we inspire our students to attain the highest possible level of scholarship, character, and intellectual growth.

The Athletic Director is responsible for the total operation of the school’s athletic program, functions, and facilities and the eligibility of students and coaches. It is his or her responsibility to implement and facilitate the stated objectives of WES. The Athletic Director supervises, manages, coordinates, and plans for all athletic programs, activities, and related athletic facility operations.

The responsibilities for a WES Athletic Director are, but not limited to, as follows:

  • Coordinates and supervises athletic programs
  • Responsible for teaching good sportsmanship and the WES pillars of responsibility, trust, respect, forgiveness, and perseverance
  • Responsible for checking/monitoring all students academic eligibility requirements and sports safety requirements including sports physicals and parent/guardian consent
  • Directs the operation, maintenance, and scheduling of the athletic facilities for the school and outside agencies
  • Completes all coach requirements regarding sports safety including CPR, AED, and First Aid certification and any applicable sports safety trainings in a timely manner
  • Maintains positive public relations and communications
  • Coordinates athletic transportation and schedules
  • Implements security and safety measures of athletic events, including the creation of emergency action plans as required by law
  • Conducts inventories of athletic equipment, uniforms, and supplies
  • Supervises Assistant Coaches
  • Maintains records of all compliance standards for students and coaches
  • Creates and executes age appropriate physical education classes, using curriculum activities and instructional objectives that are standards based, measurable, and accelerate the transfer of learning and knowledge
  • Keep parents and guardians well-informed about students’ progress, utilizing consistent communication, Progress Reports and Report Cards, and Parent/Teacher conferences
  • Participate in school-wide events (some of these may be during evenings and/or weekends)
  • Actively engages in faculty meetings and professional development opportunities.
  • Performs all job related duties as assigned and in accordance with the rules, policies, and regulations, together with exhibiting high professionalism, standards of conduct, and work ethic
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience:

An ideal candidate for a WES Athletic Director possesses:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Three (3) years of coaching experience and/or athletic director’s experience
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience
  • Successful experience working with boys of color from low-income backgrounds
  • A deeply held belief that all students are capable of success
  • Ability to demonstrate compassion while accepting no excuses and taking personal responsibility for student growth
  • A willingness to go above and beyond for the success of our students
  • A commitment to igniting a passion for learning in children
  • An ability to instill and model a growth mindset for students, never giving up on students
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills Outstanding organizational skills and professionalism
  • Proven ability to take initiative and seek opportunities for continuous improvement
  • A commitment to work collaboratively with a close-knit faculty to do ‘what’s best for our boys
  • Demonstrated dependability and an ability to be flexible High level of attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate with wide variety of stakeholders (including students, faculty and staff, families)
  • Ability to utilize technology, including Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google application
